Waves chronicles a few days in the life of Nora, a college grad living with her aunt in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. As the summer season of tourists and beach weather comes to a close, in Nora’s eyes, so does her life. She is left with a meaningless diploma and no place to go but back to her childhood home. Norah seems to retrogress to her life before college. But is it possible to recapture the excitement of her pre-college home, the love of her high school sweetheart, and the commitment to her part-time job? Although she is surrounded by the vibrant colors of the coming fall in a small town, Norah finds herself with no future and no idea what she wants to do with her life.

The Waves production started on the 9th of October, 2009 and was an absolutely amazing experience from the beginning. What really should have been shot in three or four days we accomplished in two over our first shoot weekend in Cape Cod. It was a bit chaotic getting everybody up to Wellfleet, Massachusetts and our director of photography was late on his way to pick up equipment from Film Star Rentals in Boston. He arrived right as Film Star was closing. He said that everybody helping him was efficient and friendly about getting us off with the equipment to Wellfleet for our first early morning of shooting. The equipment was incredible and we didn’t run into any trouble with it. Starting from the beginning with Film Star and talking with Rudi I have not been more satisfied with a rental house. I was always surprised at how our needs were always taken care of in an extremely timely fashion which I have not seen with other rental houses. Next time we will drive from New York to Boston for our equipment!

Three Times Productions has been around for a little under a year and already we’re getting known for highly-creative spots and marketing videos. As a new company, we’re dealing with lower budgets than normal. Since a lot of our stuff is destined for the web or internal use, like a lot of you, we’ve been making use of the incredible quality of current prosumer cameras. The HVX was our workhorse and gave us great results but as a company, we knew that we needed to step-up our game a little bit. We needed resolution, to put it simply. And where else do you go for that than the Red ONE?

We got a call from StudioShare.org asking us to put together two, one-minute short films for them to use as web commercials. We saw this as the perfect opportunity to use the Red.

While we now had the opportunity to use the camera, we still really didn’t have the budget.

Or at least that’s what I would have thought had I not known about Billy Mead and Film Star Rentals.

I called up Billy and was of course greeted with his usual excitement and enthusiasm. If you’re reading this blog, you know that his prices are good but if you haven’t met The Man, let me tell you, Billy’s a guy who really cares about you and your business. Whether you’re a freelancer or a production company owner, he wants to know you’re doing well, in this economy and beyond. Part of that is because he’s a good business owner who gives great customer service but the other part is because he just loves this industry, loves this town and wants to see it thrive.

I sent him my gear request (and he politely reminded me it’s far more convenient to order online… he was right and I’ll remember next time, dude.) The quote I got back was phenomenal. He understood that this was an opportunity for us and worked with us to make it happen.

The shoot went great, with only one or two hitches. And who was on the phone with me to smooth it out? Billy Mead. And I mean, instantly. Like, stepped-out-of-a-meeting instantly. And we were up and running again in moments.

The results speak for themselves. We’re going into meetings now with this Red material on our reel and people are bug-eyed… “What did you shoot this on?”

And these are people who’ve been doing 35mm commercials for years.

After shooting the Red, I’m confident in saying film’s over. This is the future.

DEADLIEST CATCH LEADS DISCOVERY’S PRIMETIME EMMY NOMINATIONS WITH FOUR NODS INCLUDING OUTSTANDING NONFICTION SERIES

(Silver Spring, Md.) – Reeling in both viewers and critics, DEADLIEST CATCH has once again been recognized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, earning Primetime Emmy® nominations in four different categories.  Overall, Discovery Communications, the leader in nonfiction content, garnered a total of eight nominations for Discovery Channel (7) and Animal Planet (1) when the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced today.

Discovery Channel’s DEADLIEST CATCH, which captures the dangers, adventures and disasters of a fleet of crab-fishing boats on the icy Bering Sea, led the network in Primetime Emmy nominations in the following categories: Outstanding Nonfiction Series; Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming; Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming; and Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming.

Director, Writer  Justin Lerner will be working alongside ‘New Moon’ Star Jackson Rathbone. Rathbone will produce his first film ‘Girlfriend” which is written and directed by Lerner. While filming in Boston this month, the Production will be shooting with equipment furnished by Film Star Rentals!
